There are many different types of connectors on the market. The hard part is deciding which connector is right for the job. Hopefully this guide will help you.
Wire Connector
If the wire connector attaches under a screw or a screw type connector, a
spade connector is what you want to use. These connectors come in
nylon insulated,
vinyl insulated,
non-insulated, and
high temperature varieties. If you think that the wire is going to bear any weight, or be pulled away from the connector / connection post, use a
blocked spade connector instead. This connector also comes in a
nylon insulated,
non-insulated, and
vinyl insulated.
Another type of connector has
wings on it which helps the person grip the connector and spin it around the wires. With this type of connector, the wire screws into the spring that loaded on the inside. This type of connector is used for connections that do not require a lot of pulling. I have seen these type of connectors used repeatedly on a boat or an automobile in areas that no moisture can get into. I have used type of connector on ceiling fans and I have seen electricians use this type of connector all throughout new wiring in a home in the electrical boxes.
The most common connector is the
butt connector. This is used for attaching two wires together and if used properly, those wires more than likely will not come apart unless you “REALLY” pull on them. Butt connectors come in different varieties as well. Some have
no insulation and conduct electricity through the connector. Another type is
heat shrinkable. This means, that if you apply heat to the connector, the outside coating will shrink down around the wires. This is great if you know that the connector has a chance of getting wet.
Nelco Products carries a variety of
crimping tools too. These tools are necessary when using butt connectors. If you have any questions about picking the right connectors for the job you are working on please do not hesitate to call us at
