Braided Sleeving Products

Braided sleeving provides a continuous abrasion resistance for wires, cables and tubing. It is lightweight, provides durable protection and allows for use with irregular shapes. The construction of braided sleeving also allows for complete drainage for preventing moisture and condensation from damaging the inner wire it covers. Braided sleeving comes in a wide variety of materials and is design for many different applications.

Nelco Products offers two varieties of braided sleeving for use in both general purpose applications and applications where fire retardant properties are desirable or necessary. Read below for more information on choosing right type of braided sleeving for your intended application.

Nelco braided sleeving
Protecto FPE - Flame Retardant Braided Sleeving
Protecto FPE is a braided sleeving produced by braiding specially formulated flame retardant polyester monofilaments into a tubular sleeve. It is tough yet lightweight sleeving typically used to jacket cable assemblies, wire harnesses and industrial hoses. This sleeving is UL recognized as a VW-1 component and rated for use up to 125 °C.

Protecto PE - General purpose polyester braided sleeving
Protecto PE is a braided sleeving produced by braiding polyester monofilaments into a tubular sleeve. It is tough yet lightweight braided sleeving typically used to jacket cable assemblies, wire harnesses and industrial hoses. This sleeving is UL recognized for use up to 125 °C.

Braided Sleeving Expansion
Designed for ultimate flexibility, braided sleeving usually expands up to three times its own ID to fit over irregular shapes and different sizes of connectors and end-fittings. Braided sleeving comes in polyester for general-purpose use, flame retardant polyester for chemical and flame resistance applications at temperatures up to 220 degrees Celsius. Nylon braided sleeving is characterized by its extreme flexibility, high strength, toughness and resistance abrasion. It softens at about 225 degrees Celsius and melts at about 250 degrees Celsius.

Braided sleeving can be installed onto cable bundles in various ways. The most popular installation method is the copper tubing method. Using the copper method one slides a section of copper tube or other type tubing into the braided sleeving. The tube should be of the same length as the braided sleeving. The cables are inserted through the tubing until they extend past the other end beyond the braided sleeving. While holding the braided sleeving and cable bundle on the opposite end and pulling out the tube, one should end up with a cable bundle protected within the braided sleeving.

About polyester braided sleeving
A braided sleeving manufactured from extruded monofilaments of polyester is used widely for the making up of looms and harnesses. This product gives a very good appearance and protection to the conductors inside. The construction also has the advantage of leads being able to be taken out at any point along the length of the braid. Its toughness is also used to advantage in the protection and outer reinforcement of rubber hoses.

About nylon braided sleeving
Nylon is the generic name for a family of polyamides formed by the condensation of dibasic organic acids and diamines. Nylon braided sleeving is characterized by its extreme flexibility, high strength, toughness and resistance to abrasion. Nylon shows good resistance to acids in weak concentrations and most alkalies and is generally unaffected by organic solvents. Nylon is considered to be water repellent but actually is hygroscopic and will absorb up to 2 percent moisture content at normal humidities. Absorbed moisture will tend to increase its flexibility and impact strength. Most nylon braided sleeving melts before burning. It softens at about 225 degrees Celsius and melts at about 250 degrees Celsius. Nylon braided sleeving will show some loss of physical properties after long exposure to sunlight or elevated temperatures.

Nylon braided sleevings are used over wire, wire bundles and harnesses, cable assemblies, tubing and hoses where it provides a tough durable protection.
